Out Of Our Heads UK
Released in England in September of 1965
Out Of Our Heads was the third LP for the domestic market in UK. The highest position in the charts was second place which was reached in November of 1965. The album spent in total 24 weeks in the Top 20.
This LP was not sold in other European countries. Decca opted for releasing the US version of OOOH for export to the rest of Europe, and still pressing it in UK. The catalogue number was LK4725 for the export version.
Both the cover and the songs are different on the two LP’s. The main reason for pressing two different OOOH records in England was that the megahit from summer of -65, “Satisfaction” should be available in Europe on a LP. Decca’s policy in UK was not to issue any tracks on a LP that already could be found on a single. Satisfaction had been released in UK on a single so therefore they released another version of OOOH for the UK domestic market.
Vinyl versions
Grooved and Non Grooved labels
Both Mono and Stereo records can be found with grooved and non-grooved labels. This indicates that mono records were pressed up to the end on the 60’s. No other differences are existing on the vinyl.
Cover versions
There are a few cover differences and details to take notice of on this LP.
Mono & Stereo catalogue numbers
No variations on the Mono & Stereo texts. Pictured here are Mono and Stereo covers.
The 1982-1983 releases with label design 12 do not have the catalogue number printed on the front of the cover.
Misspelling
One small detail to take notice of is that the Copyright year is misspelled as “965” instead of “1965”: This is sometimes marketed as “extremely rare misprint” on items sold on e-bay. In fact, all covers from the very first one in 1965 and up to the last one in 1980’s had the same spelling error. So, if you find one that has 1965, THAT copy would be a rare one.
Printed By
Most of the existing covers has “Printed in England by Robert Stace.” as seen above. Some early Mono covers do have “Clout & Baker”.
All covers made in the 70’s with boxed label records has “Printed in England by Robert Stace”.
The light and dark cover
Very dark covers were produced at some point of time. The dark cover has so far been found only with non-grooved stereo LP’s, indicating that they were pressed in late 1968 or 1969. Light coloured to the left and the dark version to the right.
The Green Cover
The colour on the first versions of the cover were almost black and white, only a slight greenish tune was there. The so called “green cover” is only existing on boxed label LP’s and this cover is made in the mid 70’s.
"Clarifoli"
All sleeves with non-boxed vinyl labels and most of the sleeves with boxed vinyl labels has the “Clarifoil” text in the left corner. There are some mid 70’s stereo sleeves that do not have the text.
Label versions
OOOH sold in great quantities and therefore it can be found with several label versions. To be noted is that OOOH was the first LP that had only the “MADE IN ENGLAND. THE DECCA RECORD CO.LTD.” on the upper part of the label. Mono records are only existing with non-boxed labels whereas the Stereo is existing with both non-boxed and boxed labels.
To be noted is also that all known mono labels have the publishing year on the left side of the label, above the publishing data. It is generally believed that the publishing year was moved to the bottom of the label around March of 1967. This would then indicate that all mono labels used for this record were printed before March of 1967 and the odd ones found on non-grooved pressings were re-used old labels.
